Amazon has scrapped plans to construct four data centers on the site of a former George Washington University campus in Loudoun County, Virginia, opting instead to transform the property into a mixed-use and residential development. The decision, reported by The Washington Post, marks a significant shift for the company at a location just outside Washington, D.C. The move follows sustained pushback from local residents regarding the impact of such facilities on their community.
The agreement reached includes several community-oriented concessions. Amazon will donate 25 acres of the 122-acre property to Loudoun County for a new community arts center and a recreational facility. Additionally, the company will contribute $5 million to the county's housing fund. The proposal for the four facilities was filed in July, and in September, Amazon met with Phyllis J. Randall, chair of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, who suggested a different use for the land.
The reversal is particularly notable given the location. Loudoun County is known as "Data Center Alley" because it holds the world's largest concentration of such facilities. Residents have raised concerns about the noise these centers generate and the significant amounts of electricity they consume. The county's stance on new construction has also shifted in recent months, reflecting a broader trend of community opposition.
