A strong ocean current killed a British mother of two on the island of Bimini. The Royal Bahamas Police Force opened an investigation into the death of the 36-year-old woman on Tuesday.
The woman, believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire, was snorkeling near the southern point of the island with her husband and sons. Police reported that a sudden current swept the two boys away. The mother swam toward them but was also carried off by the water. The boys were later pulled from the sea.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a call shortly after 10:00 am on Tuesday. The report stated that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. Police rushed to the scene and learned that the woman had already been transported to the local clinic.
A local doctor pronounced her dead at the facility. Police confirmed that CPR was administered at the ferry dock after she was pulled from the water. Despite these efforts, she did not survive the ordeal.
The force stated that foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. The UK Foreign Office confirmed it is in contact with local authorities to support the family.
The investigation remains open as officials gather further evidence regarding the incident.
