Hamburg prosecutors detained an 18-year-old man on Thursday on suspicion of causing the death of a 14-year-old girl in Indiana. The arrest followed a tip provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Prosecutors officially announced the detention on Friday. They charged the suspect with being an indirect perpetrator of murder and grievous bodily harm.
The suspect allegedly belonged to an online group named the Nefarious Maniac Kult, or NMK. This group operates within a larger global network called COM. Between September and October, when the suspect was 17, he used the messaging platform Discord to exert influence over the Indiana victim. Prosecutors described the girl as psychologically fragile.
Authorities allege the suspect pressured the victim to cut herself. He reportedly told her to write the letters NMK on a wall using her own blood. The victim was also made to send video recordings of these acts to the suspect. A few days after these incidents, the girl hanged herself in her bedroom. Prosecutors stated that the suspect sought a video recording of her death.
The suspect allegedly hoped the video would raise his standing within the NMK group or help him gain entry. FBI Indianapolis Special Agent in Charge Timothy J. O'Malley said his office worked with the Fort Wayne Police Department to provide German police with information that advanced the arrest. The Fort Wayne Police Department Homicide Unit identified the suspect as someone who contributed to the juvenile's death.
O'Malley stated that the FBI would work with international partners to find those who exploit children. He said there is no safe haven from justice regardless of location. The case occurs against a backdrop of rising nihilistic violent extremism. FBI Director Kash Patel reported a 300% increase in such cases from September 2024 to September 2025. Many of these cases involve the group known as 764.
The 764 group lacks a specific ideology but encourages self-harm and violence. Members urge victims to produce videos documenting acts of self-harm. They also request child sexual abuse material. The Hamburg prosecutor's office is currently processing the case following the transfer of the suspect from police custody.
