At least seven people have been killed in a targeted shooting at a Christian church in southern Jordan, marking a significant escalation in violence against the country’s religious minorities. The attack occurred on Friday during a funeral service in the village of Hammoud, located within the Karak governorate. Authorities have confirmed the incident as a rare assault on the Christian community in a nation that is predominantly Sunni Muslim.
Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya addressed the press to provide initial details on the casualty count. He reported that in addition to the seven fatalities, 34 others sustained injuries during the siege. The minister attributed the violence to a group of extremists, indicating a coordinated effort rather than a random act of crime. A wide-ranging manhunt for the remaining perpetrators is currently underway across the region.
The public security directorate outlined the sequence of events, stating that the assailants stormed the compound of a Greek Orthodox church before opening fire. According to officials, the gunmen exited a vehicle during the funeral procession to launch their assault. Karak, which hosts a substantial Christian population, is situated approximately 110 miles south of the capital, Amman. This geographic distance from the political center highlights the strategic nature of targeting a community stronghold.
Visual evidence released by the state broadcaster, Al-Mamlaka, offers a grim look at the chaos. The footage shows two men in casual attire wielding pistols while a third individual carries a long gun. The attackers are seen firing from a street entrance before advancing into the church grounds. An eyewitness who spoke to the broadcaster described the vehicle pulling up and the subsequent five minutes of unbroken gunfire. The witness estimated that between 150 and 200 people were present inside and around the church, noting that the majority of the victims were older adults between the ages of 50 and 70.
The reaction from the Jordanian leadership has been swift and forceful. Minister of Government Communications Mohammed Al-Momani confirmed that security forces are leading the investigation into the breach. King Abdullah II responded on social media, vowing the harshest retaliation against those responsible. He emphasized that every Jordanian life is precious and pledged to strike with an iron fist against those who threaten the nation’s stability.
The attack has also drawn international attention, particularly from the Christian community in the region. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, the only Christian head of state in the Arab world, condemned the shooting as a heinous terrorist attack. In a statement from the presidency, he noted that the incident reaffirms that terrorism has no specific religion or homeland. He argued that the primary aim of such violence is to strike at coexistence and spread strife among neighbors.
This tragedy echoes previous waves of violence in the same region. In 2016, the Karak area experienced a series of deadly ambushes against police forces, including an attack at a popular tourist site near a Crusader castle. That incident resulted in ten deaths, seven of whom were officers, along with dozens of injuries. Security forces ultimately neutralized the attackers after a lengthy standoff. The recurrence of high-profile violence in this governorate suggests ongoing security challenges for the area.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on identifying the specific extremist group behind the assault. The combination of the timing, the location, and the method of attack suggests a well-planned operation. With the manhunt expanding, authorities are working to secure the area while supporting the injured and the families of the deceased.
