Australian MP Helen Haines is listed as serious but stable, an update from the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne on Saturday morning. This marks the first change in her status since she was airlifted to the facility on Monday. The improvement follows the deliberate strike that occurred outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, a town in north-east Victoria.

Haines, 65, serves as an independent member of parliament. Authorities state that a car intentionally hit her during the incident. Medical staff subsequently amputated both of her legs due to the severity of the injuries sustained.

Phil Haines, her husband, described the event as a horrendous incident that left his wife with significant injuries on Wednesday. He noted, however, that her heart and mind were in good shape.

Brendan Nugent, 43, was arrested shortly after the attack. Police allege he drove his Toyota LandCruiser into the MP. He has appeared in court facing three charges: dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official.

Nugent’s lawyer told the court that his client has mental health concerns but provided no further details. Victoria Police, supported by the Australian Federal Police, are continuing their investigation. Officers have not yet established a motive and are examining whether drug use or medication played a role. Nugent’s family stated they were long-time friends of Haines.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commented on the incident shortly after it occurred, telling ABC television that Australia had seen a rise in temperature and too much shouting. Haines entered parliament in 2019 following a career as a nurse and midwife.
