The Los Angeles Rams won 24-9 against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, a result driven entirely by the defense after the offense failed to record a first down for the first 28 minutes of play. The Rams' defensive unit, led by head coach Chris Shula, held the Chargers to just 295 total yards and limited them to a single field goal. The Chargers, who improved to 0-7, were stopped on 60% of their third-down attempts and their only fourth-down attempt.

The offensive stall marked a historic moment for the franchise. This game was the first in head coach Sean McVay's tenure where the Rams failed to convert on their first five possessions. Quarterback Matthew Stafford threw several incomplete passes into the dirt or out of bounds rather than testing his receivers against tight coverage. It was not until a two-minute drive at the end of the first half that the offense finally recorded a first down and scored a touchdown.

Defensive coordinator Chris Shula's unit generated pressure that kept the Chargers' running game in check. The Rams allowed only 2.6 yards per carry and recorded three tackles for loss. Safety Quentin Lake set the tone early with a 45-yard interception return in the first quarter, which accounted for more yards than the Rams' entire offensive total for the first 28 minutes of the game.

Cornerback Trent McDuffie, returning from a two-game absence due to a groin injury, was a central figure in the defensive effort. He made tackles in the flat and ran down ball carriers in the backfield. Eight of his first nine tackles resulted in the Chargers gaining five yards or fewer. His interception in the third quarter set up a screen-pass touchdown for Puka Nacua, a play that effectively decided the outcome.

The defense also forced the Chargers to settle for field goals when they reached the red zone. The Rams stopped San Diego short of the red zone four times. The only time the Chargers reached the Rams' 20-yard line, they attempted and missed a field goal, keeping their total score at nine points.

Despite the defensive dominance, the Rams' offense showed signs of inconsistency. With wide receivers Davante Adams and Colby Parkinson out, the passing game lacked reliability. On 3rd-and-1, McVay called a roll-out pass instead of a run, forcing Stafford to throw the ball away and ceding possession to punter Ethan Evans. The offense did find some success on the ground, with running back Blake Corum carrying the ball five times for 55 yards to open the third quarter, including a 23-yard touchdown.

Injuries provided a minor setback for the defense. Both McDuffie and cornerback Jaylin Watson, who was dealing with a shoulder issue, left the game early. McVay stated that he did not have updated information on either player's status following the contest. The Rams finished with a 4-4 record after the win.

One notable moment of levity occurred when linebacker Wesley Bailey stripped the ball from the Chargers' quarterback. Aaron Donald attempted to corral the fumble at the sideline but missed, allowing the ball to bounce out of bounds. Donald lay on the ground in mild embarrassment as teammate Braden Fiske mimed performing CPR on him. McVay joked that he would tease Donald about the miss in the coming days.

Wide receiver Puka Nacua acknowledged the offensive shortcomings while praising the defensive effort. He noted that the team must continue to build execution and play complementary football to match the intensity of the defense. The Rams will look to improve their offensive consistency as they prepare for their next matchup.
