Salon Pros Share Two-Step Finish to Lock In Shine and Kill Frizz
Experts advise a 30-second cool air blast followed by a minimal dose of sealing oil to prevent humidity from reversing home styling.

Professional hairdressers have standardized on a specific two-part routine to replicate salon-quality results at home. The technique aims to stop hair from losing shape or turning dull within hours of styling. The core of the method involves a precise timing sequence with a hair dryer and a small amount of product.
The first step addresses the physical state of the hair shaft. Heat from the dryer makes the fiber elastic and moldable. However, allowing hair to cool naturally at room temperature causes it to absorb ambient moisture immediately. This absorption raises the cuticle and creates frizz. Stylists recommend switching the dryer to its lowest setting and directing cool air across the entire head for 30 seconds. This action acts as a freeze button, closing the open cuticles and locking in the shape. The result is a smoother surface that reflects light more effectively, producing instant shine.
The second step involves applying a hydrophobic barrier. Once the hair is cool and the cuticles are aligned, stylists apply exactly two or three drops of sealing oil. This oil is not intended to hydrate the hair. Its function is to seal the shaft and create a barrier against external moisture. This layer prevents humidity from penetrating the fiber and disrupting the style. It also keeps the ends smooth and united.
The order of operations is critical for the method to work. Users must first complete their standard drying process using hot or warm air and a brush to shape the hair. Next, they switch the dryer to the cool setting and pass it from the roots to the tips for the 30-second duration. Only after the hair has cooled should the oil be applied. The user places the two or three drops in the palm of their hand and rubs their hands vigorously to warm the product before distributing it through the hair.
