A potential connection at a Ugandan airport is now under intense review by public health leaders.

Officials from the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention raised the issue during a media briefing this week. They are investigating whether the initial Ebola patient identified in Nigeria had contact with the first confirmed case in Kenya while both were at Entebbe International Airport. This inquiry aims to clarify how the virus may have moved between these two distinct national outbreaks.

The Nigerian case was announced on Tuesday, marking the country's first instance of the disease in over ten years. The individual is the spouse of a diplomat serving in Abuja and holds Ugandan citizenship. She had visited Uganda for a holiday in September before returning to Nigeria at the start of this month. Dr. Wessam Mankoula, who oversees emergency response at the Africa CDC, confirmed that she is currently receiving medical care. Authorities have isolated forty-four people who had close proximity to her, and teams are working to determine the original source of her exposure.

The location of this new case carries significant weight for regional health planning. As the most densely populated nation on the continent, Nigeria represents a major logistical and epidemiological challenge. It is the fourth African country to report infections during this specific wave, distinguishing itself as the first in West Africa. This places the outbreak far from the primary epicenter in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the crisis began.

The current surge, which started in eastern Congo in May, is tracking as the fastest-spreading Ebola event on record. The toll in Congo has reached at least 4,600 deaths with approximately 9,700 total infections. Uganda, a neighboring country, initially logged around twenty cases but was cleared of the virus in August. Kenya saw its first patient in early October, with eight additional confirmations following shortly after. That first Kenyan patient, who has since passed away, traveled from Congo to Kenya via Uganda, creating a plausible transmission path that investigators are now tracing.

The overlapping presence of both patients at the same airport on the same day triggered this specific line of inquiry. Mankoula noted that the agency is examining if there was any direct interaction between the two individuals during their time in the terminal. Understanding this potential link is crucial for mapping the disease's movement across borders.

Ebola is transmitted through direct touch with the bodily fluids of an infected person or through items that have been contaminated. The illness presents with high fever and can be deadly. Generally, a person does not pose a risk to others until visible symptoms emerge.
