Anthropic’s Pending IPO Set to Turn Early Backers Into Billionaires

Investors who backed the AI lab during its early and mid-stage rounds see their holdings multiply significantly, with some stakes now valued in the billions before the public listing.

For the individuals and firms that placed capital into Anthropic during its earlier private rounds, the company’s anticipated public listing this year promises a substantial financial shift. While the market is currently pricing the AI laboratory at a valuation of up to $2 trillion upon its IPO, the stakes held by specific venture capital firms and early investors already represent billions of dollars at the company’s most recent private valuation of $965 billion.

The disparity between entry points and current valuations highlights the scale of the windfall. Eric Schmidt, who left his role as Google CEO to invest in the startup’s Series A in 2021, entered when the company was valued at $461 million. According to PitchBook data, his position has since grown to approximately 1% of the company. Even without the IPO premium, that single-percent stake is currently worth nearly $10 billion.

Other major players entered at significantly higher valuations but still secured massive returns. Iconiq, which committed $6 billion to Anthropic last year when the company was valued at $183 billion, now holds a position worth $17 billion. Analysts suggest this late-stage bet could double in value once the stock goes public. Similarly, Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D round, has invested over $1 billion in total. Their cumulative stake is currently valued at $14 billion.

Newer entrants have also seen rapid appreciation, though their entry prices were much higher. Sequoia first backed the AI lab earlier this year, investing $3 billion when the valuation stood at $380 billion. This purchase secured roughly 1% ownership, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial investment before any public market gains are realized.

Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, took a more gradual approach. The firm initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round and has since added another $400 million to its position. While the exact current value is described as being in the billions, the trajectory suggests significant growth. Notably, Kutcher departed Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch his own venture capital firm.

Perhaps the most dramatic multiple belongs to Spark Capital, the only VC firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. They invested $75 million in the same 2023 Series C round, when the company was valued at just $5 billion. That initial position has ballooned more than ninetyfold, reaching a current value of $7 billion.

These figures illustrate how the AI sector’s valuation growth has compounded for those who held shares through multiple rounds. The upcoming IPO is expected to further amplify these numbers, potentially reshaping the financial landscape for these specific backers and setting a high bar for future AI valuations.

As the company moves toward its public debut, the focus will shift from private market negotiations to public shareholder expectations. For the backers detailed here, the next few months will determine whether their paper wealth translates into liquid assets at the projected $2 trillion mark, or if market conditions alter the final outcome.
