Residents in four Australian states face new rounds of heavy rain and severe thunderstorms this weekend. The Bureau of Meteorology issued warnings for South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Tasmania. These warnings come as a cold front moves across the continent, bringing additional moisture to regions already saturated by recent storms.

Senior meteorologist David Crock noted that the current conditions resemble summer weather patterns more than typical October conditions. He stated that large amounts of moisture have persisted across Queensland and northern New South Wales for seven to ten days. This duration allowed rainfall totals to build significantly in specific coastal and hinterland areas.

Queensland experienced its heaviest rainfall on Thursday, with torrential downpours stretching from Caboolture south to the Border Ranges. Some locations recorded more than 200mm of rain in that single period. The sudden influx of water caused flash flooding and led to hundreds of emergency calls for assistance from residents.

The Sunshine Coast hinterlands and Caboolture recorded seven-day rainfall totals between 300mm and 400mm. In parts of these areas, the total reached 450mm. This volume of precipitation is more than double the average rainfall for the month of October. The sustained wet weather forced several schools to close on Friday due to safety concerns.

The Queensland fire department conducted 16 swift-water rescues during the recent flooding events. In one specific incident, rescue crews used a raft to reach an elderly man in Caboolture. He was holding onto the roof of his vehicle as water levels rose around him. The department reported that these operations were necessary due to the rapid rise in water levels across low-lying areas.

New weather systems are now moving into the southeast. Severe thunderstorms are forecast for central and eastern Queensland on Saturday, affecting towns including Rockhampton, Gladstone, and Bundaberg. The cold front is expected to cross New South Wales on Sunday, bringing storms to Sydney, Brisbane, and inland areas. Parts of Victoria and South Australia are also under severe storm warnings.

Tasmania is expected to see heavy rain developing overnight into Sunday morning. The Bureau of Meteorology maintains nine flood warnings for southern Queensland while monitoring the new frontal system. The combination of existing saturation and incoming moisture creates a high risk for flash flooding in affected regions.
