Cruz Azul intends to sign Robert Morales from Pumas during the upcoming winter transfer window, according to unofficial reports circulating within Liga MX. The blue team is reportedly preparing to outbid the university club for the Paraguayan forward, a move that would disrupt Pumas' offensive plans for the second half of the season.
Pumas currently holds a buyout option for Morales, who arrived on loan from Toluca. The purchase price is set at $4 million, a sum that Cruz Azul views as affordable given its financial resources. The cement factory club aims to offer Morales a higher salary and a longer contract to secure his commitment before Pumas can finalize the buyout.
The rivalry between the two clubs influences this negotiation. Pumas have previously denied Cruz Azul the lease for the Olímpico Universitario stadium, creating friction between the administrations. Cruz Azul sees this antagonism as an opportunity to strike while Pumas are focused on their internal strategy to reach the playoffs.
Morales has scored four goals in the current tournament. Pumas staff consider him essential to their squad, noting his impact extends beyond his goal count. The university club plans to exercise the purchase option to retain him, but they face a legal ambiguity regarding the length of his contract with Toluca, which Cruz Azul is monitoring closely.
Cruz Azul believes it can exploit this contractual gap to intervene in the negotiations. The club is also aware that Tigres, another Liga MX team, is interested in Morales and understands the market value of the player. Both Cruz Azul and Tigres have the financial capacity to outmatch Pumas' current offer.
A potential vacancy in Cruz Azul's roster may facilitate the deal. Reports suggest Gabriel Fernández is close to leaving the team, which would free up a foreign player slot. This opening would allow Cruz Azul to register Morales immediately upon his arrival, making the transfer logistically viable for the upcoming window.
