Brewers win first title as MLB offseason starts with labor deadline looming
The Milwaukee Brewers are champions, but the 2026-27 season faces a major disruption because the current labor deal ends December 1.

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays to secure their first World Series title in franchise history. This victory marks the start of the 2026-27 offseason, but the calendar is packed with urgent deadlines. The central conflict is a looming labor dispute that could halt baseball operations.
The current collective bargaining agreement expires at 11:59 p.m. ET on December 1. Owners are expected to lock out the players until a new deal is reached. This stoppage could last for days, weeks, or months. It might affect spring training or even the 2027 regular season if the sides do not find peace before the weather turns.
Major transactions are already moving. As of 9 a.m. ET on October 29, players with at least six years of service time became free agents. Trades involving 40-man roster players also resumed for the first time since the summer deadline. Free agents have a five-day window to negotiate only with their most recent team before the market opens fully on November 2.
Contract decisions pile up around November 1 and 2. Gold Glove winners will be announced during an ESPN broadcast on November 1 at 8:30 p.m. ET. The Cubs and Blue Jays each have five finalists. On November 2, most contract option decisions are due. This includes Michael King's opt-out with the Padres, Bo Bichette's opt-out with the Mets, and the Orioles' $20 million club option on Luis Robert Jr.
The same day is the deadline for qualifying offers, which are one-year deals worth $23.15 million. Randy Arozarena is eligible to receive one from the Mariners, but Tarik Skubal is not because he was traded during the season. Free agency formally opens at 5 p.m. ET on November 2.
Awards week runs from November 9 to 12 on MLB Network at 7 p.m. ET each day. The GM Meetings take place from November 10 to 12 in Las Vegas. Owners will meet in New York from November 17 to 19, likely as a final strategy session before the CBA expires. The Hall of Fame's Classic Baseball Committee results on December 6 are unaffected and will be announced as scheduled.
Other events are subject to change if a lockout begins. These include the Winter Meetings in San Diego from December 7 to 9, the December 8 draft lottery, and the December 9 Rule 5 Draft. The Winter Meetings and the Rule 5 Draft were canceled during the last lockout. The 2027 Hall of Fame class is set to be announced on January 19.
