Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the deployment of a third US aircraft carrier to the Middle East region. The move accompanies preparations by Washington and Jerusalem for a potential military strike on Iran that could occur after the November 3 midterm elections. A person briefed on the war planning told NPR that the two nations are coordinating for this post-election action. Tehran has stated it is ready for both diplomacy and war while demanding formal control of the Strait of Hormuz and the withdrawal of US troops.

President Donald Trump is expected to weigh options for military action after voters head to the polls. This timing aims to prevent a spike in oil prices before the election. Hegseth recently traveled to Israel to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi noted that his country is prepared for all outcomes. The US and Israel possess the capability to inflict heavy damage, yet Tehran shows no signs of making major concessions.

Economic pressures are mounting for American households as the election approaches. The University of Florida's Election Lab reports that nearly 21 million Americans have already cast ballots by mail or in person. This total increased by approximately 2 million in a single day. Early voting in key battleground states is running higher than in the last midterm cycle. Democrats are voting early at higher rates than Republicans, while unaffiliated voters are also participating at elevated levels.

Grocery costs remain a central concern for voters. Ground beef reached $6.79 per pound last month, an 85% increase over the past decade according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Overall grocery prices have risen due to higher labor costs, tariffs, and energy prices linked to the Iran conflict. Eggs dropped to $2.27 per dozen after hitting a record $6.23 in March 2025. Butter averaged $3.96 in September, a 17.3% decrease from the previous year due to oversupply. Coffee prices remain 44% higher than two years ago despite the removal of tariffs.

Legal proceedings involving the president continue in parallel. A federal magistrate judge ruled that Trump must sit for a deposition in his $10 billion defamation case against the BBC. The suit concerns a Panorama broadcast from late October 2024 that allegedly edited his January 6 speech. Trump previously canceled a scheduled deposition citing matters of national importance and proposed a January date instead. The BBC seeks details on his state of mind during the speech and how he has profited since returning to the White House.

A federal judge in California is also restricting pre-election field operations by the Department of Homeland Security. The agency states these efforts aim to identify noncitizens who allegedly voted illegally in nine states. Trump promised lower prices during his second term, but the rising cost of staples continues to test that pledge. The next major step in the legal process is the scheduled deposition, which Trump has not yet confirmed he will attend.
