The 15-minute duration of the shooting in the Paris suburb of Trappes underscores the speed with which the attack unfolded on Friday morning. Authorities confirmed that one person died and at least five others were wounded, including a 12-year-old girl who was shot eight times.

President Emmanuel Macron declared the incident a racist terror attack, stating that the victims were targeted because of their skin color or perceived religion. He noted that the suspect’s statements indicated the violence was premeditated. "There is no place for this in France," Macron said after meeting with local officials and residents.

Trappes mayor Ali Rabeh told BFMTV that the suspect drove through Trappes and neighboring La Verriere, firing at random in an attempt to cause a bloodbath. Rabeh said the gunman targeted passersby at three locations, including a playground, and described the limited casualty count as a miracle. He characterized the event as a likely first attempted mass killing motivated by Islamophobia and racism.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated that the weapon appeared to be military-grade or at least automatic. He reported that five officers from the anti-crime brigade stopped the attack and arrested the suspect in the nearby town of Coignieres. A police source told Agence France-Presse that the shooter fired in bursts from his vehicle at approximately 10:30 a.m. local time.

Officials initially reported four wounded, but Rabeh later revised the count to five, noting that three victims were in critical condition. The mayor of La Verriere, Nicolas Dainville, told AFP that the 12-year-old girl remains in stable condition. Rabeh said the deceased was of African origin and that one critically wounded victim is of North African origin.

Prosecutors have opened an investigation for murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise. They are examining whether the attacks targeted the real or supposed race, ethnicity, nationality, or religion of the victims. The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office said three people from the suspect’s family and friend circle were placed in police custody Friday evening. The suspect has four prior convictions that are legally expunged, though they have not been publicly identified.

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu wrote on X that the case is very serious and that all resources of the security forces and judiciary are fully mobilized. Macron added that the nation is standing with the victims. The shooting occurred while France faced ongoing tension from cost-of-living protests and overnight curfews. Students and labor activists are expected to demonstrate again Saturday, with 70,000 police officers and gendarmes deployed. Major Paris museums, including the Louvre, will close, and Art Basel Paris canceled its weekend program over safety concerns.

Forensic investigators examined evidence at a gas station in Trappes. Samy, a local resident, told reporters he saw a body on the ground from his window while his mother heard loud bangs as a gray Renault Clio sped past. The suspect’s vehicle was central to the operation, serving as both the firing platform and the means of escape until the arrest in Coignieres.
