A prototype cartridge of Pokémon Red for the Nintendo Game Boy has entered the auction market. As of October 23, 2026, the listing displays a single bid of $25,000. The item was initially identified by Retro Dodo, which characterized the hardware as incredibly rare.

Specialists at PSA authenticated the physical cartridge. They could not perform a complete data read of the contents. However, they successfully read the first 32KB of data. PSA labeled this specific reading result as technically unique. The organization stated that the readable game data is completely identical to the U.S. retail version. PSA expressed confidence that the unreadable portion of the data also matches the final release.

The authentication report identified two technical differences in the ROM header data. Neither difference impacts gameplay. One variation appears at offset 0x014C. This location denotes the Mask ROM version. The value is set to 55 instead of the standard 00. This change alters the calculated header checksum at offset 0x014D. That checksum reads CB rather than the expected 20.

The cartridge bears a sticker with the label DMB-MBC-16M-FLASH and the part number DMG-(F)KGDB-01. PSA interprets DMB as Dot Matrix Game, the original internal codename for the Game Boy. The label suggests the use of a Memory Bank Controller chip. This component allowed games to exceed the standard 32KB ROM limit. The 16M designation likely indicates 16 megabits of flash-writable memory. The physical unit is longer than a standard commercial Game Boy cartridge.

The auction materials describe the board as a previously undocumented development unit. The Rare Gaming Dump wiki lists the same part number for a different development cartridge from the year 2000. That earlier unit also used a 16-megabit Sharp flash chip labeled U1 FLASH MEMORY. Images in the current auction listing show a design nearly identical to the wiki entry, though the sticker text differs slightly.

Pokémon Red launched in 1998 alongside Green and Blue. The game helped establish the global Pokémon franchise. Red and Blue combined have sold more than 31 million copies. Several days remain before the current auction closes. The final price may increase if additional bidders enter before the deadline.

A commenter on the original report suggested this specific copy may be a master unit that powers on and plays normally. The commenter also noted that a Nintendo Age user named Pal rocks sold a batch of demo cartridges in 2015. Those items reportedly came from a Nintendo employee who kept them rather than destroying them. These details are based on reader comments and have not been independently verified.
