Satellite Speeds Hit 400 km/h as Ukraine Confirms Full Network Restoration
The restoration of full bandwidth for Starlink and Starshield removes a critical bottleneck for military logistics and drone operations.

Ukraine’s military communications infrastructure has returned to its peak performance levels, resolving a significant operational bottleneck that had constrained frontline activity. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the restrictions on the Starlink and Starshield satellite systems were lifted by the morning of 24 October. This development marks a return to full capacity for a technology stack that has become central to modern warfare logistics.
In a video address, Zelenskyy confirmed that both systems are now operating at the speeds they were capable of before the limitations were imposed. He stated, "Starlink and Starshield are back to operating at the speeds they were capable of before these restrictions were imposed. Now we have the speed we need." The president noted that recovery began overnight and that the required levels for military use were achieved by morning.
The restoration of bandwidth is viewed as a critical factor for operational efficiency. Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of this development for frontline logistics and for the protection of Ukrainian territory against jet-powered Shahed drones. Stable and high-speed connections are essential for the coordination of these assets, which rely on real-time data transmission for effective deployment.
Official measurements corroborate the president’s claims. Prior to the announcement, Ukraine’s defence forces and experts from the Ministry of Defence recorded both systems working at speeds above 161 km/h. The Ministry of Defence later issued an official confirmation, stating that it was registering speeds above 400 km/h and that the connection had become stable. These figures indicate a significant improvement over the previous constrained levels.
This resolution follows a period of disruption that affected several sectors along the line of contact. A few days earlier, Zelenskyy had reported that Starlink and Starshield equipment stopped working at speeds of 130 to 161 km/h in these areas. He explained that this interference hampered logistics and limited Ukraine’s ability to utilize drones effectively, creating a tangible gap in operational capability.
The issue also attracted attention at the highest levels of political leadership. On 16 October, US President Donald Trump claimed that the White House had not been involved in limiting Ukraine’s use of the system. This statement was made in the context of the ongoing technical difficulties and the strategic importance of the satellite networks to the conflict.
Reports suggest that the bandwidth limitations were a strategic consideration. The Telegraph reported that SpaceX CEO Elon Musk had approached Trump with the idea of restricting the bandwidth of the Starlink and Starshield satellite networks used by the Ukrainian military. This proposal appears to have been implemented prior to the recent restoration of full speeds.
The return to full speed represents a shift in the technical landscape of the conflict. By restoring the capacity to 400 km/h, the infrastructure can now support the data demands of modern warfare without the previous constraints. This stability is expected to enhance the coordination of military assets and improve the overall effectiveness of defensive and offensive operations.
As the systems operate at their pre-restriction levels, the focus now shifts to sustaining this performance. The confirmation of stable connections by the Ministry of Defence suggests that the network is ready for continued high-volume usage. This development provides a clearer picture of the technological capabilities available to both sides in the ongoing conflict.
The restoration of these satellite speeds underscores the critical role of private technology in state-level military operations. The ability to adjust bandwidth and restore full capacity highlights the leverage held by technology providers in shaping the dynamics of the battlefield. For now, the immediate operational concerns regarding speed and stability have been addressed.
