Smart bird feeder prices have dropped in anticipation of the holiday season.
Retailers are currently offering early Black Friday discounts on models from Birdfy and Kiwibit, with sale prices ranging from $110 to $170. A Wired reviewer, who has tested these devices for years, stated that the current pricing makes them suitable purchases for gifts or personal use.
The top recommendation is the original Birdfy feeder equipped with a solar panel, which is listed at $127. This represents a 29 percent reduction from its standard price. The discount applies specifically to the blue version of the unit, while the yellow version costs $13 more. A version without the solar panel is available for $110. The reviewer advises paying the additional $17 for the solar option, noting that the panels have proven reliable and eliminate the need to bring the feeder indoors for charging. The device supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and includes a two-year warranty.
The Kiwibit Feeder 2 with a solar roof is available for $170, also a 29 percent discount. Although the company released a newer Feeder 2 Pro model for $220, the reviewer describes the standard Feeder 2 as exceedingly well designed. This is the lowest price they have observed for this specific model. It features a 1.5-liter seed hopper that is split to hold two types of feed and can be lifted out by a top handle for refilling without removing the entire unit.
The Feeder 2 captures 8-megapixel photos and 4K video, which the reviewer rates as top-tier for this price range. The solar roof maintained charge levels in various weather conditions during testing. The companion app functions without the Kiwibit Plus subscription, although the reviewer noted a trend of moving more features behind a paywall. This model is limited to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and carries a one-year warranty.
A third option is the Kiwibit 4K Feeder with auxiliary solar, priced at $140 or 26 percent off. It shares the same camera and hardware as the Feeder 2 but lacks the built-in solar roof. The included 3-watt solar panel mounts easily on the back of the wall bracket. This option allows buyers to save $30 while retaining Kiwibit's build quality and image resolution.
Smart feeders have been available since 2020. Current models generally offer high-resolution cameras, 4K video recording, and AI bird identification. Most require minimal maintenance beyond refilling the seed, provided the feeder is placed using the 5-7-9 rule for pole mounts to keep squirrels at a distance.
