Spotify Shared Plans: Seven-Day QR Code Check
Users of Duo and Family subscriptions must scan a physical code on a plan manager's device or lose premium access.

Spotify users on shared subscriptions face a new physical requirement to keep their premium access. The company now requires members to scan a QR code in person on the device of the plan administrator. If a user does not complete this scan within seven days, their account will drop to the free tier.
The verification process involves a direct, face-to-face interaction. The plan manager displays a code, and the member must scan it with their own phone. This step confirms that the subscriber is present at the registered address. Spotify’s support documentation confirms the policy, following user reports on Reddit about receiving the prompt.
Missing the deadline carries a specific penalty beyond the downgrade. A user who fails to verify their status will be blocked from joining any other Duo or Family plan for 12 months. They must wait a full year before they can rejoin a shared subscription. The seven-day window starts once the user receives the QR code notification.
The new rule tightens enforcement of an existing condition. Spotify’s terms of service have long required that all members of a family plan live at the same address. The company states that the QR code step closes the gap between the written rule and previous, looser application. This move aims to verify that subscribers are actual household members rather than friends sharing a plan.
Analysts suggest the change targets a specific revenue leak. Goldman Sachs estimated in an October 15 report that a meaningful share of family plan users are not actual household members. The firm noted that enforcement of residency rules has been minimal in the past. They view tighter verification as an opportunity for additional monetization from multi-user plans.
The policy may affect households that do not fit a standard living arrangement. The source notes that families with a child away at college or a spouse traveling for work might face difficulties. These groups may struggle to meet for the in-person scan within the seven-day limit. The crackdown could reach beyond casual groups of friends to include legitimate family units.
