Tesla has officially scheduled the start of private Cybercab deliveries for customers to occur before the end of 2026. This announcement, made during the company’s third-quarter earnings call on October 21, resolves long-standing uncertainty regarding when the purpose-built autonomous vehicle would become available to the general public.
Lars Moravy, Tesla’s Vice President of Engineering, stated that the company is targeting a year-end launch for private ownership. He confirmed that production of the Cybercab is currently active on the assembly line at Gigafactory Texas. However, Moravy clarified that the initial units rolling off the line are being assigned exclusively to Tesla’s internal Robotaxi fleet rather than being sold to individual consumers.
The strategy involves a phased approach to private sales. As operations scale, Tesla plans to deliver fully designed autonomous vehicles to its customer base, with the Cybercab serving as the first model in this category. Moravy noted that these initial private deliveries will start on a small scale. This cautious rollout allows the company to gain practical experience with delivery logistics, various ownership models, and the management of autonomous vehicles operating outside of Tesla’s direct fleet control.
Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, reinforced the limited scope of private ownership for the two-seater vehicle. He described the Cybercab primarily as a "transport-as-a-service" offering, distinguishing it from traditional personal ownership vehicles like the Model 3, Model Y, or the upcoming Roadster. Musk emphasized that the "vast majority" of Cybercab units will remain Tesla-owned and operated within the service network.
The Cybercab is a distinct two-seater design that lacks traditional steering wheels or pedals, relying entirely on Tesla’s Full Self-Driving technology. Production of the vehicle has been ongoing since February 2026. Early units were integrated into Tesla’s Robotaxi service in early September, coinciding with the launch of public rides. The company has previously indicated an approximate price point of $30,000 for the vehicle when sold to private owners.
While private Cybercab deliveries are slated for late 2026, broader availability of unsupervised Full Self-Driving for consumer cars is expected in the second quarter of 2027. Ashok Elluswamy, Head of AI at Tesla, provided this timeline during the earnings call. This suggests that early private Cybercab buyers or fleet operators may encounter vehicles with geographically restricted autonomous capabilities due to the pace of regulatory approval.
Despite the confirmed delivery date, several hurdles remain before the Cybercab reaches private hands. The company must navigate the logistical challenges of distributing a new vehicle class and ensuring that regulatory frameworks are in place to support unsupervised autonomous operation in private hands. The upcoming period will focus on scaling the Robotaxi fleet while preparing the infrastructure for the first private customer deliveries.
This development marks a significant milestone for Tesla’s autonomous vehicle strategy. By prioritizing its internal fleet for the initial production phase, Tesla aims to validate the technology and operational models before extending ownership to the public. The end-of-2026 target provides a concrete timeline for customers interested in the two-seater, while maintaining the core service-based model for the majority of units.
