Paramount+ has officially greenlit a sequel event series to the 1995 film Clueless, bringing back Alicia Silverstone as the iconic character Cher Horowitz.
The new story is set approximately thirty years after the original movie. It depicts Cher as a successful businesswoman who is raising a teenage daughter. Silverstone will act in the series and also serve as an executive producer.
Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the original film, returns to the project as an executive producer. She is joined by original producer Robert Lawrence. The creative team is working to expand the narrative for this new chapter.
The project has changed hands before reaching its current home. Peacock ended its own planned Clueless sequel earlier this year. CBS Studios and Paramount then continued development before landing the series at the streaming service.
Production is expected to begin in Los Angeles in 2027. The franchise previously saw a television adaptation run from 1996 to 1999, featuring Rachel Blanchard in the title role. A separate reboot focused on the character Dionne was also developed but never moved forward.
Silverstone stated that the goal is to honor the original film while introducing a fresh chapter. The 1995 movie was loosely inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma and featured an ensemble cast that included Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, and Brittany Murphy. Paramount+ has not yet announced if other original cast members will return.
