Scott Chaplin, who served as Langley mayor from 2021 to 2023, has publicly endorsed Tavier Wasser in the upcoming sheriff election.
Chaplin detailed the hiring process that brought Wasser to Langley, noting it included a nationwide search, dozens of applicants, and a private investigator reviewing the candidate's history back to his teenage years. The selection also required drug and psychological testing alongside multiple interviews.
The former mayor addressed recent claims that Wasser and his opponent, Felici, identify as "constitutional sheriffs." Chaplin stated that neither candidate holds that specific title, which he described as an Orwellian term for a leader above local, state, and federal laws. He noted that Wasser used the term incorrectly during an early campaign speech but later admitted the error.
Chaplin described extensive hours spent with Wasser discussing policing, personnel management, and budget constraints. He said Wasser offered strong ideas for the department and the city while advocating for officers and staff. The former mayor emphasized that Wasser was comfortable disagreeing with him and admitting mistakes, while maintaining a professional and approachable demeanor in public settings.
Chaplin pointed to Wasser's background as a county deputy, his managerial role in the Marines, and his tenure in Langley as evidence that he will serve the entire community well. He urged voters to support Wasser regardless of their political affiliation.
