With Election Day arriving Tuesday, candidates in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District spent Sunday mobilizing their base. One final day of campaigning remains Monday before voters head to the polls.
Republican Brinker Harding, who is running to replace U.S. Rep. Don Bacon, met with supporters in Elkhorn on Sunday afternoon. He joined incumbent Attorney General Mike Hilgers and Senator Pete Ricketts for a discussion on policy and the midterm race. Harding emphasized the urgency of the final weekend, telling the crowd, “And we’ve got two more days to continue that sprint. And we’re going to rush through that finish tape. And we’re going to make sure that CD2 stays red.”
On the Democratic side, candidate Denise Powell focused on face-to-face contact in South Omaha. She spent the day knocking on doors alongside volunteers. Her campaign reported holding eight canvass events across the neighborhood on Sunday. Powell noted that residents frequently cite rising costs as a primary concern. “They’re frustrated by what’s going on in the world. They’re struggling. And it’s the same conversations about groceries and gas and housing and healthcare. But they also understand that we’ve got an opportunity to sort of change in the direction of things,” Powell said.
Powell acknowledged that voters are fatigued by the volume of advertisements and text messages. Her final message to constituents is a reminder that voting occurs Tuesday and that they should prepare a specific plan to reach the polls. Her team intends to continue door-to-door outreach until 8 p.m. on Election Day.
