Apple TV subscribers in the United States received Dolby Atmos audio support for Formula 1 coverage on Friday, October 23. The United States Grand Prix in Austin is the first Formula 1 race ever broadcast in this format. Apple and Dolby Laboratories announced the change earlier this month, confirming the upgrade would begin with this specific weekend.
Apple states the audio technology is designed to place viewers at the center of the event. The system captures sound from team radios, commentary, and engines. It also includes the noise from on-track battles and pit lane activity. The company notes that combining Dolby Atmos with Dolby Vision creates a high-fidelity visual and audio experience.
The race schedule is currently underway. First practice has concluded. Practice 2 is scheduled for Friday, October 23, at 5 p.m. ET. Practice 3 begins on Saturday, October 24, at 1:30 p.m. ET. Qualifying follows on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET. The main race is set for Sunday, October 25, at 4 p.m. ET.
Apple is hosting a live screening of the Sunday race at its Domain NORTHSIDE store in Austin, Texas. This location recently hosted Apple CEO John Ternus and retail chief Deirdre O'Brien. They attended the launch of the iPhone Duo at the same store on Friday.
The company also updated Apple Maps for the event. It expanded its Detailed City Experience feature to include Austin. The new map displays the Circuit of The Americas with turn numbers and grandstands. It also adds 3D landmarks to help fans navigate the venue.
The service costs $14.99 per month. Subscribers can also access it through the Apple One bundle. The platform currently streams titles including Ted Lasso, Severance, The Studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking, and Silo.
