Dale Brown, the man who established Louisiana State University as a premier basketball program, died on Friday, October 23. He was 90 years old. Brown spent 25 seasons as the head coach for the Tigers, a tenure that spanned from 1972 to 1997.

During his time in Baton Rouge, Brown recorded 448 victories, the most of any head coach in school history. His teams secured four Southeastern Conference regular-season titles and earned 13 berths in the NCAA Tournament. The program reached the Final Four twice under his leadership, in 1981 and 1986.

His passing occurred 48 hours after the university announced his selection for the 2027 John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award. This honor recognizes coaches who have demonstrated exceptional influence on the sport. Brown also received the Associated Press National Coach of the Year award in 1981 and was named SEC Coach of the Year on four occasions.

Brown mentored several future professionals, including NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. The former Chris Jackson played alongside Rudy Macklin during Brown's era. In a family statement released following the news, relatives described Brown as a man who prioritized others above all else. They noted that he always led with his heart and acted as a humanitarian before anything else.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry posted on social media that Brown put the university on the map and that his influence would persist for decades. Marc J. Spears, a sports journalist, also paid tribute on X, referring to Brown as an extraordinary human. Brown arrived in 1972 to build a competitive team and spent years traveling across the state to generate fan support.

In a 2025 interview with WAFB reporter Chris Nakamoto, Brown recounted a game against undefeated Kentucky where all five starters had fouled out. He told his remaining players that they were now backups, not substitutes, and the team won. Brown credited his mother for teaching him to stand up for what is right. He was born on October 31, 1935, in Minot, North Dakota.

LSU honored Brown by unveiling Dale Brown Court inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in 2022. The following year, the venue was renamed Dale Brown/Sue Gunter Court to acknowledge both former coaches. Brown was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, and the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame. He died eight days before his 91st birthday.
