Fresno State Basketball: Local Star Ryleigh Schoonover Joins Roster

Ryleigh Schoonover will make her college basketball debut at the Save Mart Center in less than two weeks. The Fresno State Bulldogs open their season against UC Merced, marking the start of Schoonover’s first year in the Pac-12.

Schoonover is part of a freshman class joining a program that is pursuing a conference championship. She chose to stay within the Central Valley rather than leave the area after her high school career ended. The decision allowed her to continue playing near her home base.

Her preparation comes from a high school program defined by sustained dominance. Clovis West has won the Central Section girls basketball championship for 14 consecutive years. Coach Craig Campbell, who led the Golden Eagles, stated that the goal is to remain competitive annually, even if they do not win every title.

Fresno State head coach Ryan McCarthy has emphasized the high level of competition Schoonover brings to the team. He described her as the best player in the region for the class of 2026. McCarthy noted that she proved her abilities immediately upon arriving at Fresno State.

Schoonover credited Campbell with preparing her for the intensity of college basketball. She explained that the standard of play at Clovis West mirrors the expectations in McCarthy’s program. For her, wearing the valley 'V' on her jersey carries a specific meaning that players from outside the region may not fully appreciate.

McCarthy believes Schoonover’s background in a winning culture gives her an advantage. He said her experience in a program that consistently won has set a specific expectation for her performance on the floor. Her time in a championship environment has readied her for the demands of college athletics.

Campbell expressed confidence in Schoonover’s potential at the next level. He stated that the coaching staff is excited because she is still developing her full abilities. According to Campbell, she is currently only beginning to show what she can do for the Bulldogs.
