A powerful seismic event registered at magnitude 7 struck a remote section of Tibet late on Thursday, leaving at least 16 people dead and 46 others injured. The United States Geological Survey reported the tremor originated at 10:33 p.m. local time, occurring at a shallow depth of 18 kilometres. Its epicentre was located 191 kilometres east-northeast of Nagqu, a high-altitude area characterized by sparse population density.

Damage assessments point to significant structural failures in the vicinity of Nagqu, located more than 300 kilometres north of the capital, Lhasa. According to the Nagqu media office, citing city government officials, at least 339 homes and 20 livestock sheds have collapsed. Among the casualties, 11 individuals sustained serious injuries, while the remaining 35 were treated for minor issues. Search and rescue operations remain active as of this report.

Authorities have mobilized substantial resources to address the displacement and damage. More than 1,600 individuals from the local county have been deployed to assist with rescue efforts. Relief supplies arriving in the region include 1,000 prefabricated housing units, approximately 3,000 tents, folding beds, flashlights, and winter clothing intended for those affected by the disaster.

Logistical networks have faced immediate disruptions. Official state media reported that communications were severed in parts of the region, while local railway authorities halted train service through the affected zone. Additionally, rockfalls triggered by the quake necessitated the closure of a section of National Highway 317, restricting passage to emergency, rescue, and official support vehicles while crews work to clear debris.

Conditions may complicate the work ahead. Intermittent snow is forecast across the earthquake zone over the next three days, potentially hindering ongoing operations. China's national broadcaster described the event as the largest earthquake in the region in five years, highlighting the severity of the tremor.

Geographically, the incident occurred in a high-altitude region, with the epicenter situated far from major population centers. Nagqu itself is located over 300 kilometres north of Lhasa. Authorities continue to manage the immediate aftermath, with rescue operations still under way as of this report.
