Samsung is set to release its last foldable smartphone of 2026 in China on October 29, according to a new leak. The device, identified as the Galaxy W27, will hit the market six days from now. This launch marks the conclusion of the company's annual tradition of selling exclusive foldable variants in the Chinese market.
The information comes from leaker Ice Universe, who shared images of the device. The photos show a glossy blue back panel with gold accents surrounding a triple-camera array. The design confirms that the W27 is a styled version of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. This choice of base hardware stands out because it differs from previous years' patterns.
Historically, the Galaxy W series has been a rebranded top-tier foldable intended specifically for Chinese consumers. These devices often feature elaborate packaging and premium finishes. While the 2024 Z Fold 6 Special Edition saw a wider release, the W27 returns to the regional-exclusive format. It serves as the final entry in this specific yearly lineup for the current calendar year.
The decision to base the W27 on the Ultra model is a notable departure. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 features a new shape that has resonated well with customers. By choosing the Ultra as the foundation, Samsung is prioritizing the wider format over the newer design of the standard model. This aligns with growing trends in China, where wide-format foldables are gaining popularity.
Competitors in the region are also moving in this direction. Xiaomi's latest foldable uses a virtually identical form factor. Huawei has been releasing wide foldables for a longer period than any other manufacturer. The release of the W27 places Samsung in direct competition with these rivals in a segment that is expanding rapidly.
The leak arrives as attention on foldable displays intensifies. Analysts predict that global foldable display shipments will increase by 44% in 2026. This growth is driven largely by the arrival of wide foldables. Samsung has stated that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 has been a hit, noting that the release of the iPhone Duo has increased focus on its foldable lineup.
The company has also updated several existing Galaxy devices to Android 17. While Samsung has multiple new foldables planned for next year, the W27 represents the end of the 2026 cycle. If the leaked date holds, no further foldable releases are expected from the company before the year ends.
