Tesla will not begin shipping its Optimus humanoid robot to external customers until around the end of 2027, a delay announced by Elon Musk during the company’s quarterly earnings call. The postponement is attributed to ongoing technical hurdles regarding the robot's hands, long-term durability, and the artificial intelligence required to operate them.

Musk stated that early production of Optimus has commenced on Tesla's high-volume line in Fremont, where Model S and Model X vehicles were previously assembled. While much of the infrastructure intended to produce 20,000 units per week is installed, reaching that capacity could take a year or longer because the design is still undergoing modifications. The company is specifically addressing issues with the electromechanical design and reliability, specifically ensuring the machine does not wear out after a month of use.

The mechanical difficulties are centered on the robot's hands. An engineer noted that the hands and custom gears remain areas of concern. Musk explained the dilemma of creating fingers soft enough to manipulate delicate objects while maintaining durability against constant wear, noting that, unlike human skin, the robot cannot heal. On the software side, Tesla is working to resolve issues with its AI architecture. Since the company lacks a fleet of robots collecting real-world data comparable to its Full Self-Driving cars, it plans to utilize 10,000 to 20,000 units in an 'Optimist Academy' to practice tasks.

This timeline represents a shift from previous commitments. In 2024, Musk projected internal use in 2025 and high-volume production for other companies in 2026. Although Tesla previously reported ramping up production to hundreds of units per week, the company's own shareholder letter identifies the current batch as the 'first production-quality bots' manufactured, indicating that previous units were not ready for commercial deployment.

Despite Musk's assertion that 'there is no one that is even close to Tesla' regarding general-purpose humanoids, competitors are advancing on similar schedules. XPeng activated an automated production line in September and plans mass production by the end of 2026, with deliveries starting in the first half of 2027. Boston Dynamics began producing its electric Atlas robot in January and has already committed all of its 2026 deployments, including to Google DeepMind.

Looking ahead, Tesla is scheduled to release an AI5 chip for Optimus around April 2027. Additionally, Musk promised a video within a month or two demonstrating the robot performing tasks that are not pre-programmed. The company aims to solve the remaining AI and reliability issues by the end of next year to facilitate the start of deliveries for industrial applications.
