The Las Vegas Justice Court will receive $110,000 from the Nevada Department of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety. This funding supports the 2027 session of the DUI Treatment Court, a program designed for drivers with multiple misdemeanor convictions for drunk driving.

The initiative seeks to reduce repeat offenses by prioritizing rehabilitation over incarceration. Established in 2003, the court requires participants to undergo regular treatment sessions and submit to random alcohol and drug screenings. Participants are also monitored using alcohol sensors, GPS trackers, and ignition interlock breath devices.

Judge Cynthia Cruz stated that the program targets underlying substance abuse issues and shifts how offenders perceive driving under the influence. She noted that the grant is necessary to serve a larger number of repeat offenders who might otherwise face jail time.

The funding also covers the salary of a specialty courts coordinator. This official screens defendants, assesses their substance abuse and mental health needs, and connects them to community resources. The coordinator ensures participants remain engaged in treatment while the court tracks their progress.

Last year, seventy people enrolled in the program. Three participants either left voluntarily or were terminated, resulting in a 96% retention rate. The grant ensures the court can maintain this level of supervision and support for the upcoming year.
