Google Messages Activates AI Shield for Android Scam Defense
The new Enhanced Protection mode uses cloud-based Gemini models to analyze chat context and screen links on select hardware.

Google Messages for Android now offers a third tier of security that uses cloud-based artificial intelligence to intercept fraud. This Enhanced Protection mode launches with three specific features aimed at stopping spam and scams that existing on-device tools miss.
The system relies on Gemini models to assess the full context of a message thread. This approach helps the app identify a scammer's intent faster when a user communicates with an unknown sender. Google states that this method handles novel and sophisticated attacks more effectively than detection currently running locally on the device.
Privacy remains a central design element for this feature. The processing occurs within Android's Private AI Compute system, a secure space where messages are encrypted. Google notes that the data is private to the user and not accessible to anyone else, including the company itself.
A second component combines the on-device Gemini Nano model with real-time web signals to vet unfamiliar links before a user taps them. This capability is available on the Pixel 10 and newer, the Samsung Galaxy S26 series, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Z Fold 8, and other select devices.
The third update redesigns how warnings appear. For links sent by unsaved numbers, the new alerts provide more time and context for users to pause before interacting. The mode is opt-in, requiring users to select Enhanced protection from the Protection and safety menu in Google Messages settings. This option has appeared in the latest Google Messages beta, version 20261020_00_RC00.
