Housing and grocery costs have pushed the income required for financial stability higher across the United States. A six-figure salary no longer guarantees comfort in many regions according to a new analysis by SmartAsset. The study determines the pre-tax income needed for a single adult and a family of four to live comfortably in each state in 2026.

The threshold for a single adult exceeds $100,000 in nearly half of all states. In every state, a single worker must earn at least $80,000 annually to cover essentials and set aside savings. For a household with two working adults and two children, the requirement reaches $329,000 in the most expensive locations.

Massachusetts presents the highest cost of living for families. A family of four there requires $329,555 per year to meet the study's definition of comfort. Hawaii tops the list for single adults, where the necessary income stands at $129,002. Mississippi offers the lowest bar for families at $187,533, while West Virginia requires the least for single adults at $81,245.

Montana recorded the largest year-over-year increase in required income. The threshold for a single adult rose 8.6% from 2025 to 2026. New York followed with an 8.4% increase, pushing the required income for a single adult to $124,342. Maine, California, and Massachusetts also saw increases of more than 5%.

Forty states require a family of four to earn at least $200,000 annually. This benchmark reflects the cost of housing, utilities, and other necessities under the 50/30/20 budgeting rule. The rule allocates 50% of income to needs, 30% to wants, and 20% to savings.

Six states saw a decrease in the income needed to live comfortably. Tennessee, Maryland, Louisiana, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Texas all require less income for a single adult in 2026 than in 2025. Tennessee shows the largest drop, with a 1.7% decline. Maryland and Louisiana also posted negative growth rates of 0.9% and 0.7% respectively.

The analysis relies on data from the MIT Living Wage Calculator. MIT updated this data in February 2026 to reflect recent economic conditions. SmartAsset adjusted these baseline figures using the 50/30/20 budgeting framework to calculate the final income estimates.

The study covers all 50 states for both single adults and four-person households. Source data providers are not affiliated with or sponsored by the study. The findings represent annual, pre-tax income figures.

The next step for readers is to compare their current earnings against these state-specific benchmarks. The data provides a concrete metric for assessing financial security in different geographic locations.
