A mix-up between cleaning supplies and food ingredients turned a standard lunch rush into a medical incident at a restaurant in western North Carolina. The error resulted in five individuals suffering chemical burns to their mouths and surrounding areas.

The chain of events began on October 26, when a Chili's Grill & Bar employee in Forest City received a granular chemical degreaser. The substance was handed over by a subcontracted worker performing pressure washing outside the building. The employee placed the product into an unmarked container, which was subsequently moved into the bar area of the restaurant.

Two days later, on October 28, a staff member preparing the bar for lunch service found the unlabelled container. Believing the granules were sugar, the worker used them to prepare margaritas. Three customers ordered the drinks and reported feeling unwell immediately after consumption. The patrons developed chemical burns in and around their mouths, prompting them to notify staff and leave the restaurant to seek medical care.

Preliminary findings indicate that two employees also tasted the substance and experienced similar symptoms. A spokesperson for the Foothills Health District confirmed that all affected individuals were treated at emergency rooms. The health department launched an investigation and temporarily suspended the restaurant's food service permit following the incident.

Inspectors ordered the restaurant to wash and disinfect all food preparation areas, equipment, and surfaces involved in the error. The investigation concluded on the morning of Thursday, November 1. Officials determined that the establishment met food safety requirements and reinstated its permit for service.

The health district used the incident to reinforce guidelines for labeling chemical products. Officials emphasized the need to prevent cleaning agents from being confused with consumable ingredients in food service environments.
