The restaurant scene in Greater Phoenix underwent a sharp change in October. Approximately twenty new dining concepts opened their doors while three long-standing establishments shut down permanently.
The most notable departure was New Garden. The south Phoenix location ceased operations after 84 years of service. It holds the distinction of being the oldest Chinese restaurant in the city. The closure was attributed to the health of the co-owners.
Other closures included Scott’s Generations. This New York-style deli in Phoenix ended its 37-year run due to lease issues. Surf City Tiki Hut in Gilbert also closed after only eight months. It had been a rebrand of Surf City Sandwich from Santa Cruz, California. Common Ground Culinary closed its Sweet Provisions ice cream shop in McCormick Ranch to expand the neighboring Grassroots Kitchen & Tap.
New entrants diversified the local menu. Angie’s The New Fast Food launched with a focus on premium ingredients and low prices. The platform, created by Tony and Roushan Christofellis, features protein bowls, grilled burritos, and fresh-cut salads. Eight additional outlets are planned.
Other new additions included Costa Bella Italian Kitchen in Scottsdale. It serves fresh pasta, veal dishes, and four types of risotto. Cowboy Seafood opened at Park Central Mall, combining Southern barbecue traditions with coastal seafood. French Crêperie brought St. Louis-style sweet and savory crepes to Old Town Scottsdale.
Sports and entertainment venues also expanded. General Admission took over the former RnR Gastropub space in Old Town. It offers chef-driven cuisine and craft cocktails. Par Five Sports Grill opened in Ahwatukee with live weekend entertainment. Stage 12 West in Mesa focuses on live musical performances alongside a food menu.
Local and regional brands added new locations. Hero, a modern Italian restaurant with Japanese influences, opened in Downtown Phoenix. It is the first of three Vivili Hospitality Group restaurants planned for the Roosevelt Row area. Homme Thai Supper Club opened in the former Copper & Sage space in Phoenix. Hook ‘N Cleaver Premium Market and Hummus Bar & Grill both opened in Scottsdale.
The month also saw the arrival of Los Milics Vineyards Tasting Room in Old Town Scottsdale. The venue offers wine by the glass or bottle and a limited food menu. Spinato’s Pizzeria opened at State Farm Stadium. It provides thin crust pizza and patio dining for event attendees. Quiriego Cocina Rustica in Scottsdale focuses on woodfired cooking and fresh tortillas.
