The Milwaukee Brewers stand one win away from their first World Series title after defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 on Monday night.
The victory extended Milwaukee's winning streak to eight straight games, tying the single postseason record. The team took a 3-0 series lead in a contest played at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.
The offense exploded in the fifth inning. Milwaukee scored eight runs, all with two outs. This marked the first time in World Series history that a team recorded eight two-out runs in a single frame.
Jackson Chourio led the charge. He recorded four hits in five at-bats and stole a base. His performance made him the second-youngest player to achieve a four-hit game with a stolen base in a World Series, behind Ty Cobb in 1908.
Brice Turang contributed two runs on a single that bounced off shortstop Taylor Walls. Walls described the play as a "knife to the chest." The rally also included RBI singles by Garrett Mitchell and an RBI double by Cooper Pratt.
Robert Gasser delivered a historic pitching performance. The rookie left-hander retired 14 consecutive batters and faced the minimum 18 batters through six innings. He became the first starter to achieve this milestone in a World Series game since Curt Schilling in 2001.
Gasser allowed only one hit, a line-drive single to Yandy Díaz in the first inning. He retired 14 straight hitters before Victor Mesa Jr. walked to start the sixth. The pitcher noted the unusual support from the road crowd, stating, "Normally it's 35,000 against nine, but tonight we had 20,000 people behind us."
Manager Pat Murphy praised Chourio's focus, calling him "tremendous" and noting he was "locked in." Murphy has previously compared Chourio to Kobe Bryant, a comparison Chourio acknowledged while discussing his approach to every at-bat.
The Rays, who led the American League with 98 wins in the regular season, have never won a World Series in their 29-season history. They now face an elimination game in Game 4 on Tuesday. Griffin Jax is scheduled to start for Tampa Bay, while Milwaukee has not announced a starter.
Historical data shows that 21 of the previous 25 teams to take a 3-0 lead in the World Series went on to sweep the series. The Brewers, who moved to Milwaukee in 1970, aim to join that group and end their long championship drought.
