Federal officials announced on Friday that 42 individuals associated with the Varrio Hidden Hills street gang face charges for distributing methamphetamine and fentanyl. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California released the indictments, marking the conclusion of a two-year investigation into the Poway-based group.

Agents seized weapons and wrapped blocks of narcotics at various locations in the county. The group allegedly moved product between Oceanside and Escondido in the north to El Cajon and Chula Vista in the south. Federal investigators identified alleged links to the Mexican Mafia during the probe.

John Marquez, a high-ranking member of the gang, was among those arrested. Prosecutors accuse him of managing cross-border distribution operations. The office stated that Marquez received drugs from suppliers in Mexico, recruited members from other local gangs to sell the substances, and transported the cash profits back to his overseas partners.

The operation included an early Wednesday morning raid on a house in Lemon Grove. FBI agents served warrants at the property and were fired upon by one of the accused members. No one was injured in the exchange. San Diego U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon said the investigation into that specific shooting continues.

Mark Remily, the Special Agent In Charge for the FBI's San Diego office, described the network as discreet in its operations. He told NBC 7 that the group operated with less overt aggression than other criminal organizations. Remily noted that the takedown will create a ripple effect across the region.

Thirty-four of the 42 suspects are currently in federal custody. Agents are searching for the remaining eight individuals. Officials expect to arrest the final suspects within the next few days.
