LA28 Selects 'Stars Align' as Official Motto for 2028 Games

The organizing committee for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles has selected a new official motto for the upcoming global event.

LA28 announced on Wednesday that the slogan will be "Stars Align." The committee stated that the phrase serves as a call to athletes, volunteers, and supporters to gather in Los Angeles when the Olympic Games open on July 14, 2028. The Paralympic Games will follow, opening on August 15, 2028.

Casey Wasserman, the chairperson and president of LA28, described the slogan as a rallying cry for a generational moment. In a written statement, Wasserman said the motto is an invitation for those at the peak of their skill and fans in the stands to share the experience. The committee noted that the phrase reflects the idea that dedication meets opportunity when the world unites.

The 2028 Games will mark the third time Los Angeles hosts the Olympic competition. The opening ceremony will take place on July 14, 2028. Competition will continue through July 30, 2028. The Paralympic Games will run from August 15 to August 27, 2028.

The competition schedule includes changes to the traditional order of events. Field hockey, basketball, rugby sevens, water polo, handball, and cricket will begin play on July 12, two days before the opening ceremony. July 15 is designated as Day 1 of the main competition. Track and field events will occur in the first week at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Swimming will move to the second week at SoFi Stadium. The marathons remain scheduled for the final weekend.

The first medal will be awarded in triathlon on Day 1 at Venice Beach. July 29 will be the busiest day for medal ceremonies. That date will feature 16 gold and bronze events in team sports and 19 individual medal events.

The Olympic program for 2028 includes 351 medal events, which is 22 more than the 2024 Paris Games. New mixed team events include artistic gymnastics, athletics, golf, archery, coastal rowing, and table tennis. The format for the artistic gymnastics mixed team event will be finalized later. The program also expands fields for women's soccer and water polo, adds a new women's boxing weight class, and increases medal events in swimming and sport climbing.

Flag football will make its Olympic debut in 2028. Lacrosse will return to the medal sports lineup for the first time in over a century. Baseball and softball will also make their return, while cricket will be part of the competition. The Paralympic opening ceremony will be held at SoFi Stadium, and the closing ceremony will take place at the Coliseum.
